It's the lighthouse route!
After you leave Yarmouth, you divert to the "Lighthouse Route", a picturesque highway that follows the jagged coast.  Many people in this area of Nova Scotia make their living from the sea.
A number of the settlement areas are populated by French Acadians.
St. Ann's Church (right) dates to 1902, in a parish was first begun in 1799.
Eglisse Ste-Anne
You eventually pass through the many "Pubnicos", in an area that was first settled by the French in the 1600's.
Many Acadians in this area resisted the expulsion and remained in this area continously since that time.
Fishing communities are scattered all along this route.
Fishing is the prime industry in the area, and boats can be seen in many of the villages along the route.
The boat on the left is passing out to sea through a marshy canal, too shallow to traverse at low tide,
but capable of allowing passage at other times.
The fishing boat on the left is steaming to sea in front of modern wonders...
a field of 17 huge and powerful windmills, extracting electric power from the often steady winds of the coastal area. You will visit these impressive windmills up close, as their huge blades slice through the air.
Fishing boats of the area appear in a variety of sizes and colors, each often a unique refection of the owner's tastes.
While the seas can be fierce and unforgiving, these sturdy "Cape Island" style boats are built to stand the worst, and fishermen take them out in weather that would scare most of us, to harvest what the seas provide.
On a calm day, the vibrant colors of the boats, the stacked lobster "pots", and the reflections of the tranquil sea make for memorable photographs.
